Interior design for a cultural center
As an introduction to the Academy of Architecture in Groningen we were
to design a new interior in a former school building.
This building used to be a school. The place where the roots of the
social life of this small community begun. Later it got some other functions
and was no longer of big social importance. By introducing a cultural center
the small village became more important.
By keeping the bearing structure in tact and reducing the inner walls
to columns the interior becomes one big communal space. In this space some
volumes are placed to enclose the required privatness of some functions.
The space within a space. The old, existing structure is only
there for keeping the inner climat optimized.
In this image you can see the reduction of the wall by inserting
columns. The interior space is then optimized so that all necessary program
fits in. When a connection with the outside is required, the volumes move
to the exterior.
